Opinions on news 25/5/09

Summary of article: It is about the death of a Nanyang Technological University(NTU)Professor and a student. The student had been trying to meet his professor for his final-year project. One day, the student unexpectedly turn up in the professor office. When the student pass a memory device said to contain his work, professor said that he did not have the software to open it. Professor Chan Kap Luk felt something hit his back. After that, professor realised that the student had used a knife to stab him in the back. After stabbing the professor, the male student - who was in his 20s - slit his wrists and jumped off a five-storey building. Professor Chan managed to escape after a struggle with Mr Widjaja.

- Professor Chan Kap Luk

Opinion 1:I think that Mr Widjaja thought that Professor Chan was picking on him. As when he gave the memory device, the professor insisted that he did not have the software to open the files inside the memory device.

Opinion 2: Maybe the student himself has his own problems and stress and he didn't have people to tell his problems to. As a result, his so stressed up that he can't think clearly, that's why he stabbed the professor. He was so stressed because Widjaja was a former president of the NTU Electronic Sports Club and has to work almost round the clock. And some of NTU students said "The day started with morning lecture at 8.30am everyday. We would be given 2 assignments per subject. Those assignments were not easily to complete. It might take months to complete them. So...if you were to take 5 subjects per semester, you would end up with 10 assignments. Each semester only last about 3 months. Everyday after lecture we would need to rush to the lab to continue with the assignments until 8 pm. That was the time the lab closed. Sometimes, it was not easy to get a place in the lab due to overcrowding. After we went back, we still have lab report, tutorial etc to continue and the cycle would repeat the next morning. One week before the exam, we were still rushing to complete assignment and that left us no time for revision."

Opinion 3:I think it's an overall pastoral care system that is necessary. They have to set up such a thing, to keep an eye on those student which show that they have problems. Those who showed problems have to also go under counseling

the one about mr widjaja being stressed is a very good opinion as you could see that he had alot of stress by checking out the info about the school getting alot of home work. But u also need to improve on your evidence as if mr widjaja was stressed y didnt the other student was stressed?

Dear Jaimond,
your opinions 2 and 3 is quite well done. You can link it to your daily lives, like ways for students on cutting down on their stress. A little stress is good to motivate you to perform better but too much stress causes your work to deteriorate. As you have mentioned, counseling is a good way to reduce your stress by telling a professional about your woes. They can give you constructive suggestions. However, this is correct if you use the professer's perspective. What about the student? Could he be the real victim? What if he was? Could it be a third party involving?
